I think it depends on the works. Some of our works fall into the second
description, seeing the user as merely someone who instantiates potential
works that are contained within a framework

On the other hand sometimes when Amit and I work together we play the
roles of author and user/co-creator in a controlled setting. We build
tools for ourselves, learn to use those tools, and then create the works
by interacting with them and recording those interactions:
